Q + A

Who runs the collective?

It was created and is moderated by me, Gina Weathersby.I’m a working professional commercial & editorial food photographer, teach food photography workshops, and mentor food photographers. You can learn more about me HERE.

Does it cost anything to join in the challenges?

Nope, it is completely free.

Why join in the challenges?

Yes, we all know that consistency + practice is what moves the needle, but sometimes it’s tough to narrow the choices down of where to begin, and that’s where prompts are a super helpful tool by taking that part out of the equation.PLUS you WILL:

▪️Grow Your Skills

▪️Push Your Creativity

▪️Work Your Craft

▪️Create Content

▪️Share Your Work

▪️Build Community #communityovercompetition

How do I join in the challenges?

You can either Subscribe to my newsletter HERE where you will receive each new food photography prompt – as well as additional tips, techniques, free resources & more – directly to your inbox, as they are released - OR - follow @gina_weathersby and @greysaltcollective on instagram where I'll share new challenges on both feedss the 1st of each month.

What do I do next?

Just follow the guidelines for each challenge, and start creating!

What levels are welcome?

All levels of food photographers from newbies to advanced intermediates are welcome.

What kind of equipment do I need?

  • If all you have is an smartphone, then use it. Many of the prompts focus on techniques and concepts and you can certainly use a smart phone.
  • Having a DSLR is ideal as you will ultimately be working to improve your photography skills, and shooting manually gives you ultimate control.
  • As far as lenses, some of the best lenses for food photographers are the 50mm, the 24-70mm, the 100 macro, but again, use what you have.
  • A computer for editing, and a laptop for shooting tethered to (if you have one.)

Having listed these, I wholeheartedly believe in working with the equipment that you have now, so whatever that looks like for you, use it.

Can I share my images on instagram or other social sites?

YES, by all means, please do!

For instagram, use the hashtag #greysaltcollective as well as tag me @gina_weathersby in your comment section so that (a) I will see it, and (b) so that it will be added to the #greysaltcollective hashtag feed. NOTE* The judges will go to the #greysaltcollective feed to view all submissions, so please don't forget to add this or your image(s) will not be seen!

If you have any additional questions at all, feel free to email me at hello@ginaweathersby.com
